Pokémon TCG Ability Cards Explained: Passive Powers on the Battlefield

Abilities are where a lot of the Pokémon TCG's deeper strategy actually lives, well beyond just picking the biggest attack.

Not an attack, a passive power

An Ability is a special effect printed on a Pokémon card separate from its attacks. Depending on the wording, it might trigger automatically when the Pokémon enters play, apply constantly while it's on the battlefield, or activate once per turn at the player's choice.

No Energy required

Unlike attacks, most Abilities don't cost Energy to use — the trade-off is usually a frequency limit, like being usable only once per turn, rather than a resource cost.

Abilities can be shut down

Certain Trainer cards and Pokémon effects exist specifically to disable an opponent's Ability, which is how competitive decks handle a particularly disruptive Ability-based strategy rather than just racing past it.
