Sweets in Aberaeron: Georgian Harbour Built by Parliament

Unlike most Welsh coastal towns, Aberaeron didn't grow up gradually — it was deliberately planned, harbour and all.

A harbour created by Act of Parliament

In 1807, the Reverend Alban Thomas Jones Gwynne obtained an Act of Parliament to develop a new harbour and town at the mouth of the River Aeron. Construction ran from 1807 to 1811, turning a stretch of coast with little more than a farmhouse into a working port.

Regency rows that made it onto stamps

Much of the town's distinctive architecture, including the rows of pastel-painted houses around the harbour, was designed by Edward Haycock in an ornamental Regency style unusual for rural Wales. The result has proved photogenic enough to appear on British postage stamps.

Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else

Aberaeron's history is built on a planned harbour and shipbuilding, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Ceredigion and the UK.
