Aberchirder is a planned village in Aberdeenshire that most people who actually live there still call by its older name.
A village built to raise the rent
Aberchirder was founded in 1764 by the local laird, Alexander Gordon of Auchintoul, who wanted to raise income from moorland that was earning him little. He laid it out as a grid of streets around a central open square, much of which survives today as a conservation area.
Foggieloan, then Aberchirder, but still Foggie
The village stood on the site of an older farm settlement called Foggieloan, and kept that name for decades. In 1823, the laird renamed it Aberchirder, after a long-abandoned settlement two miles away. The change never really took with the locals — the village is still known as Foggie or Foggieloan, and its 1999 coat of arms carries the motto 'Aye Foggieloan.'
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Aberchirder's history is built on rents and renaming, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the village come by delivery, the same as the rest of Aberdeenshire and the UK.
