Aberfeldy owes much of its historic importance to a bridge — one that General George Wade considered the finest piece of work in his entire road-building campaign.
The only way into the Highlands for years
Built in 1733 to a design by William Adam, Wade's Bridge is a five-arch crossing of the River Tay, Scotland's longest river. For a long time, it was the only bridge spanning the Tay, making it the sole reliable route into the east and central Highlands.
Wade's greatest achievement
Between 1725 and 1737, General Wade's military road programme built over 250 miles of road and more than 40 bridges across Scotland — and he regarded the bridge at Aberfeldy as the finest of them all. It's still a Category A listed structure carrying traffic today.
