Abernethy's round tower is a rare enough structure that Scotland only has one other example to compare it with.
Once a Pictish capital
Long before the tower was built, Abernethy served as an important religious and political centre for the Picts. Under Constantin, son of Kenneth mac Alpin, it is recorded as both the episcopal and royal capital of the Pictish kingdom, a status it held until the bishopric moved to St Andrews.
One of only two round towers in Scotland
The round tower itself dates from around 1100 AD, built in two distinct phases of masonry. It's one of just two surviving round towers in Scotland — the other stands at Brechin — and a Pictish symbol stone is mounted on it, added in the 1900s long after the tower itself was built.
