Sweets in Amble: Port That Shipped Half a Million Tons

Amble grew from a few hundred people into a booming Victorian coal port, built almost entirely around the harbour at the mouth of the River Coquet.

Breakwaters built for coal, not tourists

The Warkworth Harbour Commission was set up in 1837 to improve Amble's harbour, completing the north and south breakwaters by 1849. The town's population grew from around 200 in 1821 to nearly 3,000 by 1891 on the strength of that coal trade.

Half a million tons a year

By 1914, over 500,000 tons of coal were being shipped out of Amble annually. The collieries and the coal trade are long gone, but the harbour survives as a marina and fishing fleet, in a town now nicknamed "The Friendliest Port".

Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else

Amble's history is built on coal and harbours, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Northumberland and the UK.
