Ammanford grew from a small crossroads settlement into the heartland of West Wales's anthracite coal industry, and the town's own name tells part of that story.
From Cross Inn to Ammanford
The settlement was originally known as Cross Inn. As the tinplate and anthracite coal trades grew through the 19th century a village formed around it, and in November 1880 it was resolved to rename the town Ammanford, meaning the ford of the River Amman.
The heartland of anthracite mining
Ammanford became the heartland of the mining community in West Wales, with its population growing so quickly on the back of the anthracite trade that Ammanford Urban District Council was established in 1903. Industrialist Henry Herbert sank a drift mine at Bodyst in 1890, and a syndicate of Lancashire coal owners followed with two more drift mines in 1891; today a 6-metre sandstone sculpture called 'Following the Seam' stands in the town centre as a tribute to that mining heritage.
