Anstruther is home to the Scottish Fisheries Museum, a harbourside collection telling the story of Scotland's fishing industry from its earliest days to the present — a genuinely rich maritime heritage for this East Neuk town.
Founded by the fishing community in 1969
The museum was founded in 1969 by members of Anstruther's own fishing community and has since grown into a complex of converted buildings around a cobbled courtyard, some dating back to the 16th century, including the Abbot's Lodging, a fisherman's cottage and a merchant's house.
66,000 artefacts and a working herring drifter
The museum now holds more than 15 historic boats and around 66,000 artefacts gathered from across Scotland. Its flagship is the Reaper, a two-masted "fifie" herring drifter built in 1902, which still sails today as a reminder of the herring boom that once drove this stretch of the Fife coast.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Anstruther's history is built on herring and harbour life, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Fife and the UK.
