Sweets in Antrim: The Steeple, 1,000-Year-Old Round Tower

Antrim's population is around 25,600, and the town's history stretches back far further than its modern retail parks suggest — to a monastery said to have been founded around AD 495.

The Steeple

Known locally as the Steeple, Antrim's Round Tower is around 28 metres tall and dates from roughly the 10th century, built as a bell tower for an early Christian monastery. It's one of the finest surviving round towers in Ireland and still stands close to the town centre.

Antrim Castle Gardens

Antrim Castle Gardens preserves a 17th-century Anglo-Dutch water garden, restored as part of a £6 million project, on the site of a castle built in stages between 1613 and 1662 near the shores of Lough Neagh. It's one of the best-preserved formal gardens of its type in Ireland.

Junction One, and What It Doesn't Stock

For modern shopping, Antrim has Junction One retail park on the edge of town — general outlet shopping, useful for a lot of things, but not the place to find 3kg bulk bags, a vegan-specific range or halal-friendly sweets pulled together for an event.
