Appleby-in-Westmorland was settled by the Vikings in the 9th century, who named it from the Norse for "place of the apples" — and it's been the historic county town of Westmorland ever since, home to a Norman castle and Europe's largest horse fair.
A Viking name and a Norman castle
Appleby Castle was founded by Ranulf le Meschin in the early 12th century, its stone keep — known as Caesar's Tower — enlarged after being captured by William the Lion of Scotland in 1174. The castle later passed to the powerful Clifford family, and in the 17th century Lady Anne Clifford, one of the wealthiest women of her day, restored it and founded almshouses that are still in use.
Europe's largest horse fair
Appleby New Fair dates back to 1685, when King James II granted the town a second charter allowing it to hold a fair. It's now Europe's largest gathering of Gypsies and Travellers, with an estimated 10,000 Travellers and 30,000 visitors attending each early June.
