Sweets in Ardrossan: Castle Dismantled by Cromwell

Ardrossan's history runs from a dismantled medieval castle to a harbour that still carries ferries to Arran today.

A castle taken apart stone by stone

Ardrossan's origins go back to around 1140, when a castle was built on Castle Hill above the town. It stood for centuries until 1648, when Oliver Cromwell's troops destroyed it and carried much of the stone away to Ayr to build a fort there instead.

A harbour that opened the way to Arran

The modern harbour was founded on 31 July 1806 by Hugh, 12th Earl of Eglinton, and went on to anchor the town's industry. Ferry services began in 1834, running to Brodick on the Isle of Arran — a crossing that's still in regular use today.
