Sweets in Auchenblae: Two Villages Joined by Monboddo Street

Auchenblae's name now covers what used to be two separate places, joined by a single street in Victorian times.

Two settlements become one

The village grew from two separate settlements, Fordoun and Auchenblae, which merged in the latter half of the 19th century once they were linked by the development of Monboddo Street. The older Fordoun settlement, to the south, was centred on Fordoun Parish Church, a religious site since the 7th century.

A Pictish stone and a martyr's memorial

The kirk's vestibule holds the Fordoun Stone, a Pictish cross slab, while its graveyard contains the ruin of St Palladius' Chapel and a memorial to George Wishart, Scotland's first Protestant martyr. The combined village still hosts the annual Paldy Fair, a horse market with roots going back centuries.

Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else

Auchenblae's history is built on old kirks and merged villages, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the village come by delivery, the same as the rest of Aberdeenshire and the UK.
