Auchtermuchty has been a Royal Burgh since 1517, with archaeological finds in the area dating back to AD 350 — and in more recent memory, it's been both a weaving town and a television set.
Weaving, whisky and a Royal Burgh since 1517
Auchtermuchty became a Royal Burgh in 1517, and by 1843 the town had 700 hand weavers at work, alongside a bleachfield employing another 30 people. A distillery operated in the town from 1829, latterly as Stratheden Distillery, until American Prohibition brought about its closure in 1929.
Jimmy Shand and television's Tannochbrae
The town's most famous son is Sir Jimmy Shand, the accordionist and band leader who lived from 1908 to 2000 and is remembered with a statue in the town centre; the singing duo The Proclaimers are also among its best-known names. In the 1990s, Auchtermuchty's streets stood in for the fictional town of Tannochbrae in the ITV series Dr Finlay.
