Aviemore has Bronze Age origins, marked by two sets of clava cairns nearby, but the town barely grew at all until a 19th-century railway decided its fate.
A railway junction that became a resort
Aviemore existed quietly from the 1600s, but it was the opening of a Highland Railway junction in the 19th century that triggered real growth, helped by regular visits from Queen Victoria and the enthusiasm of Walter Scott. In 1961 the town became one of the country's first ski resorts, and through the 1960s, as the slopes of Cairngorm Mountain were developed, Aviemore virtually doubled in size with new hotels, chalets and indoor sports facilities.
Gateway to the Cairngorms
Today Aviemore's resident population is just over 3,000, yet it welcomes more than a million visitors a year, drawn by Cairngorm Mountain's slopes and walking routes through the Forest of Glenmore. It functions as the main entry point to Cairngorms National Park for every level of hillwalker.
