Ballater's population sits at around 1,400, making it one of the smallest places in this series — a Royal Deeside village a few miles from Balmoral Castle.
Dee Valley Confectioners, made down the road
Dee Valley Confectioners, the traditional Scottish sweet maker behind market candy, bullseyes, humbugs, soor plooms and Edinburgh rock, has been based in Ballater for around 40 years, having started out in Aberdeen in 1965. It's a genuine piece of Scottish confectionery history, and it's famous enough locally that Kylie Minogue reportedly stopped in for boiled fruit sweets and soor plooms in 2016 — but it's a production business rather than a shop you can walk into and buy a bag from on Ballater's own streets.
What that still leaves out
Bulk bags, trade cases for a business or event, and a dedicated vegan or halal-friendly range aren't something a sweet-maker's production site is set up to sell directly to the public. Ballater doesn't have an obvious shop-counter alternative for that either.
Why "sweets near me" in Ballater still points to a delivery
For anything past a small gift, ordering online and having it delivered is the more consistent route, wherever around Ballater and Royal Deeside you're based.
