Ballymoney, a market town in County Antrim's Causeway Coast and Glens, has staged its own drama festival every year since 1933 — and it's still running, making it the oldest continuously held drama festival anywhere in Ireland.
A festival older than almost everything around it
Founded in 1933, the Ballymoney Drama Festival has continued almost without a break for over ninety years, with amateur drama groups travelling from across Ireland each spring to compete on its stage. Few towns of Ballymoney's size have kept a cultural event running for so long, and the festival remains a genuine point of local pride.
A market town built on linen and agriculture
Long before the festival began, Ballymoney had grown as an agricultural and linen centre on a tributary of the River Bann, with a marketplace dating to 1775 and an old parish church from 1637 still standing at its centre. That same market-town character is part of why the festival has lasted as long as it has — Ballymoney is a town that still turns out for its own events.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Ballymoney's history is built on linen, farming and amateur theatre, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of County Antrim and the UK.
