Ballynahinch has been a market town since Sir George Rawdon founded it in the 1600s, and it's still best known for the battle fought in its streets in 1798.
A market town built by the Rawdon family
Ballynahinch was founded by Sir George Rawdon in the seventeenth century and stayed in his family's hands until 1798. Its market, held in the square, has run for centuries — by the late 1700s it was turning over around £300 a week, a serious sum for the time.
The last stand of the United Irishmen
On 12 June 1798, around 4,000 United Irishmen stationed at Ballynahinch were attacked by a government force under General George Nugent, who bombarded the town with cannon for a full day until the rebels retreated. In the aftermath, troops burned sixty-three houses in the town and surrounding area, and the United Irishmen's commander, Henry Munro, was betrayed, captured and executed.
