Banbridge grew up around a single stone bridge over the River Bann, built in 1712 — and by the 1800s the town had become so central to Ulster's linen trade that its main street needed re-engineering just to cope with the traffic.
The Cut, and Jingler's Bridge
Banbridge's defining landmark is The Cut — a deep channel driven straight through the hill in the middle of town in the 1830s so the Belfast to Dublin mail coach could get up the steep main street without a struggle. The Downshire Bridge was built across the top to link the two side streets, effectively Europe's first flyover, and locals still call it Jingler's Bridge after an old woman who used to sell apples there and jingle the coins in her pocket to attract customers.
A linen town, not a sweet-making one
By 1772 Banbridge and the Bann valley around it had 26 bleachgreens and was the principal linen-producing district in the whole of Ireland — that's the industry the town's wealth and its grand main street came from, not confectionery. There's no historic sweet factory here the way Belfast has Aunt Sandra's; Banbridge's landmarks are the Old Town Hall on Scarva Street, built in 1834, and the monument to Captain Francis Crozier, the town's Arctic explorer son.
