Sweets in Bangor: Britain's Oldest Cathedral Foundation

Bangor is a small cathedral city on the North Wales coast, and its cathedral's story goes back further than almost anywhere else in Britain.

Britain's oldest cathedral foundation

Bangor Cathedral was founded by the Welsh saint Deiniol around the year 525, on land given by Maelgwn, king of Gwynedd, making it the oldest cathedral foundation in Britain. The current building dates largely from the 12th century onward, with major restoration by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the 19th century.

A university funded by a march of quarrymen

In the early 1880s, around 3,000 Gwynedd quarrymen, farmers and their families marched through Bangor to raise money for higher education, and £1,200 was collected to convert an old coaching inn into University College of North Wales. It opened in October 1884 to 58 students and is now Bangor University.
