Barmouth sits where the Afon Mawddach meets the sea, and its Welsh name, Abermaw, means exactly that — the estuary of the Maw.
From four houses to a major shipbuilding port
Barmouth was first recorded in a 1565 survey as a settlement of just four houses. Over the following two centuries it grew into one of Wales's major shipbuilding centres, with over 300 vessels built in the town and along the estuary during the 18th and 19th centuries.
A harbour built by Act of Parliament
The Barmouth Harbour Trust was established by Act of Parliament in 1797 to repair, deepen and preserve the harbour, with a new stone pier completed in 1802. The arrival of the railway in the Victorian era then turned the shipbuilding port into a popular seaside resort, a role it still plays today.
