Barrow's original Victorian market was created in 1864 for the Furness Railway Company, the brainchild of Sir James Ramsden as thousands of workers flooded into the town for its iron, railway and shipbuilding industries; it passed to Barrow Borough Council in 1874. The current Market Hall on Duke Street opened in June 1971, with the Queen herself performing the opening — it remains one of the largest indoor markets in Cumbria, and was featured on the BBC's Hairy Bikers Go North.
