Bathgate looks like an ordinary West Lothian town, but in 1851 it was home to the world's first commercial oil refinery — the starting point for an industry that shaped the whole region.
James 'Paraffin' Young and the World's First Oil Refinery
In 1848, chemist James Young noticed oil seeping from the roof of a coal mine and worked out how to extract it deliberately by heating oil-bearing shale and coal. He patented the process in 1850 and, with partners Edward Binney and Edward Meldrum, completed an oil works at Bathgate in 1851 — the first truly commercial oil refinery anywhere in the world. It's where Young earned his nickname, "Paraffin" Young, distilling paraffin and lubricating oils from locally mined torbanite and shale.
The Bings That Are Still There
Once the richest torbanite seams ran out, West Lothian's shale took over, and for more than 50 years from 1865 the region mined around 3 million tonnes of oil shale a year. The huge pink-tinted spoil heaps left behind — known locally as bings — are still visible across West Lothian today, more than 160 years after Young's first refinery opened.
