Battle is named after one of the most consequential events in English history — and the abbey built to mark it is still standing at the centre of the town.
An abbey built as penance
After his victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, fought nearby at Senlac Hill rather than in the town of Hastings itself, William the Conqueror founded Battle Abbey on the battlefield as penance for the bloodshed. Construction ran from 1070 to 1094, and the abbey was dedicated in 1095.
Where the high altar stood
The abbey's high altar was positioned to mark the spot where King Harold is said to have died, and the settlement that grew up around the abbey took its name from the battle itself.
