Beauly's population reached around 1,410 in the 2022 census, a small Highland village on the Beauly Firth west of Inverness.
A "beautiful place," by way of a ruined priory
Beauly takes its name from the French "beau lieu" — beautiful place — most likely given by the French-speaking monks who founded Beauly Priory in 1230; a document from that decade already records the settlement in Latin as Prioratus de Bello Loco. Local tradition prefers a more romantic version, crediting Mary, Queen of Scots with exclaiming the phrase on a visit in 1564 — a good story, even though the priory's own name was already three centuries old by then. The priory's roofless walls still stand at the edge of The Square, the small shopping heart of the village.
The Square today
The Square holds a handful of everyday shops — a convenience store, a coffee shop, a bakery building with its own long history — but nothing that specialises in sweets, so it's not something we're going to claim.
