Bellshill's population stood at around 19,500 in the 2022 census, a North Lanarkshire town between Motherwell and Glasgow.
The hospital half of Lanarkshire remembers
Bellshill's best-known landmark isn't a shop. Bellshill Maternity Hospital, rebuilt after the war and formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II in July 1962, delivered generations of Lanarkshire babies — reportedly including footballer Ally McCoist and singer Sheena Easton — before it closed in 2001 and was demolished two years later, with housing now standing on the site. Locally, it's remembered as the place a very large share of the area's population actually started life.
Main Street today
Main Street itself was reshaped by a streetscape project completed around 2010 and now runs mostly to the shops you'd expect of any Scottish high street — a chemist, a discount store, cafes and takeaways — rather than an independent sweet shop.
