Billingham's parish church has been standing in one form or another since the 7th century, making it one of the oldest fixed points in a town better known today for its festival.
A Saxon tower that's stood a thousand years
Billingham was given to the church of Durham by Bishop Ecgfrid between 828 and 846, and St Cuthbert's Parish Church still carries an Anglo-Saxon tower built around AD 1000, with elements of a late-7th or early-8th-century nave surviving alongside it. A 7th-century grave-marker from the church is now held in the British Museum.
A folklore festival that still fills the streets
The Billingham International Folklore Festival grew out of a single performance by an Irish dance troupe in the town's traffic-free shopping centre during the 1960s, and the first full festival was staged in 1965. It remains one of the town's best-known events today.
