On 4 June 1731, a fire swept through Blandford Forum, destroying the church and most of the town within hours. Local architects John and William Bastard led the rebuilding over the following decades, aided by an Act of Parliament and a donation from George II, and the result is now considered one of the finest examples of uniform Georgian townscape in England.
