Bonnyrigg's name means "beautiful ridge" in Scots, but the town's real story is industrial: it was built from coal pits and carpet mills, not a single founding settlement.
Four villages, one town
In 1865 the four mining villages of Bonnyrigg, Red Row, Polton Street and Hillhead combined to form the town of Bonnyrigg, reflecting the area's long history of coal mining. The two burghs of Bonnyrigg and Lasswade later joined in 1929 to form the burgh of Bonnyrigg & Lasswade.
A carpet-making centre, and a Prime Minister's visit
From the mid-1800s Bonnyrigg became a centre for carpet manufacturing alongside its mining industry. The town's standing was enough to draw Prime Minister William Gladstone, who spoke there on 1 April 1880 as part of his Second Midlothian Campaign.

Bonnyrigg's history is built on coal, carpets and a Prime Minister's visit, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Midlothian and the UK.
