Brechin is home to one of the rarest pieces of early medieval architecture in Britain: a round tower built around AD 1000, one of only three of its kind still standing outside Ireland.
A tower built for bells, treasure and refuge
Brechin's Christian community dates back to at least the 970s, when a Culdee monastery stood on the site. The round tower itself, raised around the turn of the first millennium, stands 86 feet high with a base circumference of 50 feet, and was built primarily as a bell tower that doubled as a treasury and refuge — its carved doorway set two metres above ground and originally reached by ladder.
Joined to the cathedral centuries later
The tower stood free-standing for hundreds of years until 1806, when it was connected to the south-west corner of Brechin Cathedral's nave, which itself dates from the 13th century. A hexagonal spire was added to the tower's top in the 14th century, and the whole structure survives today as one of the most important medieval monuments in Angus.
