The Corn Exchange, and Admiral Blake's statue
Bridgwater's Corn Exchange is a Grade I listed building, completed in 1834 and extended in 1875, with a circular portico of Ionic columns at its east end. It incorporates the town's original market hall, which dates back to 1795, and stands on ground that has been used for trading for far longer still — a regular Saturday (later Wednesday) market once ran through the town, with a dedicated Cheese Cross for cheese sellers on St Mary Street and fish, fowl, fruit and vegetables traded around Cornhill.
Bridgwater's best-known landmark, though, isn't the Corn Exchange but the Admiral Blake statue, unveiled in 1900 after £1,200 was raised in public subscriptions to cast it in bronze. It commemorates Robert Blake, the town's most famous son and a leading naval commander of the English Commonwealth — a reminder of how much history is packed into a relatively small Somerset town.
What none of that includes
An 18th-century market hall and a 19th-century statue don't amount to a bulk supplier. A 3kg bulk bag, a vegan-specific range or a halal-friendly selection built for a business order isn't something a market stall or corn exchange counter carries.
Why Bridgwater shoppers order online anyway
For anything beyond a bag bought in person, ordering online and having it delivered is the more consistent option — no trip into the town centre required.
