Brixton, in the London Borough of Lambeth, is home to Electric Avenue — the first market street in London to be lit by electricity, back in 1888, and later immortalised in Eddy Grant's 1982 song of the same name.
Electric Avenue and Brixton Market
Electric Avenue runs alongside Brixton Market, and together with the covered halls of Brixton Village and Market Row, this is one of the densest concentrations of independent traders in south London — Caribbean grocers, fishmongers, record shops and street food stalls packed into Victorian arcades.
A Caribbean food capital
Brixton has been a centre of British Caribbean culture since the Windrush generation began settling in the area from the late 1940s, and that heritage still shapes the market today, from the produce on the grocers' shelves to the food stalls dishing out jerk chicken and patties.
Why "sweets near me" in Brixton usually means a market stall or supermarket aisle
Search for sweets near you in Brixton and the realistic options are a market stall, a corner shop, or a supermarket aisle — none of them set up for vegan-specific ranges, halal-friendly lines, or a full trade case for an event. For that, ordering online and having it delivered is the simpler route.
