Buckhaven was once one of Scotland's great herring towns, with a fishing fleet that in 1831 was the second-largest in the country — a genuinely maritime history for this small stretch of the Firth of Forth.
Fishing rights dating back to 1630
Buckhaven's fishing heritage reaches back to at least the 16th century, with a charter from 1630 confirming the town's fishing privileges and its standing as one of the principal fishing communities on the Forth. By 1831, the town's fleet numbered 198 boats — the second-largest in Scotland — and a harbour was completed in 1840 at a cost of six thousand pounds to the Fishery Board.
From herring to coal
Fishing declined through the 19th century, and by the 1860s Buckhaven had turned to mining instead, with a 1912 Fishery Board report noting that former fishermen were by then employed at the coal pits. One striking piece of maritime heritage survives regardless: in 1869, Buckhaven's fisherfolk bought an Episcopal church in St Andrews and had it transported, stone by stone, to the town.
