Sweets in Burscough: Augustinian Priory and Canal Town

Burscough's name is thought to come from Old Norse for "fortress in the woods", and its history runs from a medieval priory to a canal boom seven centuries later.

A priory founded in the 12th century

Burscough Priory was founded around 1189 by Robert Fitz-Henry, Lord of Lathom, for Augustinian canons. It once held the tombs of members of the Stanley family, earls of Derby, which were later moved to Ormskirk parish church, and it survived until its dissolution around 1536 under Henry VIII. Parts of the priory's remains can still be seen today.

A village remade by the canal

In the late 18th century, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal was built straight through Burscough, following the draining of nearby Martin Mere. The canal turned Burscough Bridge into one of the most important canal towns in Lancashire, and several local families worked the waterways for generations, with "canal families" tracing their roots back to the area.
