Bushmills is a small County Antrim village with an outsized claim to fame: its distillery has held a licence to make whiskey since 1608, longer than any other in the world.
A licence that predates most countries' independence
England's King James I granted a royal licence to distil whiskey at Bushmills to Thomas Phillipps, Chief Governor of Ireland, on 20 April 1608. Distilling in the area is believed to have gone on long before that, unlicensed, but 1608 is the date that makes the Old Bushmills Distillery the oldest licensed whiskey distillery anywhere in the world.
Rebuilt after fire, still running on the same river
The distillery as it's known today was formally established in 1784, and survived a disastrous fire in 1885 that destroyed much of the site — demand for the whiskey meant it was rebuilt and back in production soon after. It still draws water from the River Bush to distil and proof its whiskey, triple-distilled in the traditional Irish style.
