Sweets in Caldicot: A Castle With Nine-Foot-Thick Walls

Caldicot has had a fortification of one kind or another since Saxon times, and the stone castle the Normans built to replace it still dominates the town centre today.

A Saxon site, rebuilt in Norman stone

Caldicot Castle was built near the site of a former Saxon castle belonging to Harold Godwinson, with the Norman earls of Hereford starting work on the current castle from around 1100. Its position near the Bristol Channel let its lords watch naval traffic and move supplies easily to the site.

Nine-foot walls and a royal marriage

The castle's four-storey stone keep, added before 1220, has walls nine feet thick. When the de Bohun male line died out in 1373, the castle passed to two daughters — one of whom, Mary de Bohun, married the future King Henry IV. Caldicot was partly destroyed by Parliamentarian forces during the Civil War before being restored as a family home in the 1880s.

Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else

Caldicot's history is built on stone walls and royal marriages, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Monmouthshire and the UK.
