Cambuslang, on the southern edge of Glasgow, has a population of around 30,000, and its best-known historical moment has nothing to do with industry.
The Cam'uslang Wark
In 1742, Cambuslang's parish kirk became the centre of a mass evangelical revival known as the "Cam'uslang Wark," drawing huge crowds from across the west of Scotland to open-air preaching and prayer meetings. It remains one of the most significant events in the history of Scottish evangelicalism.
From farmland to factories
Cambuslang's economy later rested on the minerals beneath its soil — coal, limestone and some iron — before heavier industry arrived, including the Hoover factory, which operated in the town from 1946 to 2005. Main Street's former Savoy Cinema, now the Savoy Bingo Club, is a listed reminder of the town's more recent past.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Cambuslang's history is built on religious revival and heavy industry, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of South Lanarkshire and the UK.
