Campbeltown is a small town at the tip of the Kintyre peninsula, but in the Victorian era it was, by some measures, the richest town in Britain — built entirely on whisky.
More than 30 distilleries, and a town's wealth
By 1835 there were 29 distilleries at work in and around Campbeltown, run by a handful of families including the Colvilles, Mitchells and Greenlees. At its Victorian peak the town had more than 30 distilleries in operation, earning it the title "whisky capital of the world," and by the late 19th century it was reputed to be the richest town in Britain per capita.
A fast route to Glasgow, and a steep decline
Whisky could be shipped from Campbeltown's harbour to Glasgow in as little as nine hours, and the trade transformed the town's streets with malthouses and bonded warehouses. The boom didn't last: as tastes shifted and quality slipped, distillery after distillery closed, leaving just three working today — Springbank, Glen Scotia and Glengyle.
