Carlisle's population reached around 108,000 at the 2021 census, with more recent estimates putting the city closer to 110,000 — the largest settlement in Cumbria and the administrative centre of the new Cumberland unitary authority.
The Market Hall built over Roman baths
Carlisle Market Hall was built between 1887 and 1889 by Arthur Cawston and Joseph Graham for Carlisle Corporation, on a site where Roman coins were uncovered during construction — the hall stands over the remains of Roman baths. It's a Grade II listed Victorian covered market, one of only a handful left standing in the country.
The hall still trades today, though in 2025 plans were approved for the Bearmont Group, which bought the building, to redevelop it into a food hall and performance space — the biggest change to the site in over a century.
What the Market Hall doesn't stock
Even a market this historic runs stall by stall — sweet treats sold alongside meat, fruit, veg and haberdashery, not bulk bags, vegan-specific ranges or halal-friendly selections built for a trade order.
Why Carlisle shoppers order online anyway
For bulk, dietary-specific or trade quantities, ordering online and having it delivered direct to a Carlisle address is the more consistent option, whatever redevelopment is happening at the Market Hall.
