Carlton, in the Borough of Gedling, had a population of around 53,555 across its former urban district wards at the 2021 census — a Nottinghamshire town that grew from a scatter of farms into a proper suburb almost entirely within living memory of its own council.
From framework knitters to a Nottingham tram suburb
Carlton appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as "Carentune," but for most of its history it stayed a small township within the parish of Gedling, home to farmers and framework knitters. That changed fast from the 1840s, when its position on the edge of Nottingham and near the railways drew rapid growth; Carlton Urban District Council was formed in 1894 to recognise its new status, and by 1914 a tram route ran all the way from central Nottingham to Carlton, cementing it as a commuter suburb rather than a village.
Today, Carlton Hill is the town's central shopping street — a working high street of local shops and chain supermarkets rather than a heritage market or a specialist confectioner, much like many of Nottingham's other satellite suburbs.
What a suburban high street doesn't stock
Carlton Hill's shops and supermarkets aren't set up for a 3kg bulk bag, a vegan-specific range, or a halal-friendly selection ordered for a business or event — that's a different kind of buying than a weekly shop covers.
Why Carlton shoppers order online anyway
Without a dedicated sweet shop of its own, ordering online and having it delivered is the more consistent option for Carlton households — whatever the occasion.
