Carnforth grew up as a railway junction, and its station is now better known for a few weeks of filming in 1945 than for the decades of trains either side of it.
A junction rebuilt with record-breaking concrete
Carnforth station opened in 1846, built by the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway to a design by architect William Tite. It became a junction in 1857 and grew further when the Midland Railway arrived in 1867. In 1937, the LMSR spent £53,000 modernising the station, giving it what was then the longest unsupported single-piece concrete roof in Britain.
The station that starred in Brief Encounter
In February 1945, Carnforth's platforms were used to film key scenes of Brief Encounter. The town's rural setting meant filming could continue at night without the wartime blackout rules that applied in Britain's towns and cities, and the station's clock became one of the film's most repeated images. After years of decline, the station buildings were refurbished between 2000 and 2003 and now house a heritage centre.
