Golf has been played on the links at Carnoustie since at least 1527, making it one of the oldest golfing sites in the world — and the course has gone on to host some of the sport's most dramatic championship moments.
A course shaped by golf's first professionals
The present course was laid out in 1850 by Alan Robertson of St Andrews, regarded as golf's first professional, and extended to a full eighteen holes some twenty years later by Old Tom Morris. Around 300 of the town's sons, known as "The Carnoustie 300", later emigrated to spread the game across the USA, Canada, Australia and South Africa.
Eight Open Championships, one famous collapse
Carnoustie has hosted the Open Championship eight times: 1931, 1937, 1953, 1968, 1975, 1999, 2007 and 2018. The 1999 Open is still remembered for Jean van de Velde's extraordinary final-hole collapse, needing only a double-bogey six to win and carding a triple-bogey seven instead.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Carnoustie's fame is built on fairways and championship golf, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Angus and the UK.
