Sweets in Carnwath: Scotland's Oldest Foot Race, Since 1508

Carnwath, in South Lanarkshire, has a population of around 1,400, and holds the claim to Scotland's — and possibly Europe's — oldest foot race.

The Red Hose Race

The Red Hose Race dates back to 13 March 1508, and still runs today, giving Carnwath a sporting history that stretches back over 500 years. The village became a burgh of barony in 1451, and its mercat cross, erected by the 5th Lord Somerville in 1516, still stands where Main Street widens into the old Market Square.

A Norman motte

At the west end of the village, beside the golf club, an earthwork mound is all that remains of Carnwath's medieval castle, believed to date from the mid-12th century and described as one of the most impressive Norman earthworks to survive in Lanarkshire. It's a scheduled ancient monument today.

Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else

Carnwath's history is built on a medieval motte and a 500-year-old foot race, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the village come by delivery, the same as the rest of South Lanarkshire and the UK.
