Carrickfergus Castle
Carrickfergus Castle was begun in 1177 by John de Courcy, the Anglo-Norman lord who invaded Ulster that year, built on a rock jutting into Belfast Lough. It was besieged by the Scots, Irish, English and French at various points, captured by Schomberg for William III in 1689, and stayed in military use right up until 1928 — one of the most complete Norman castles anywhere in Ireland.

On the edge of town at Bonnybefore, a thatched Ulster-Scots cottage marks the birthplace of the parents of Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States, who emigrated from Carrickfergus before he was born. It's a small building with an outsized claim to fame.
