Castle Douglas grew up beside Carlingwark Loch — and that same loch spent two millennia quietly guarding one of the region's most striking archaeological finds.
A hoard dredged from the water
In around 1866, a large bronze cauldron containing about 100 iron and bronze tools was recovered from Carlingwark Loch near Fir Island. The objects are thought to be Romano-Belgic, dating from the late first or early second century AD, and the hoard is now held in the National Museums of Scotland in Edinburgh.
A town that grew from the loch shore
Castle Douglas itself began as a small cluster of cottages by the shore of Carlingwark Loch, in an area still known as The Buchan, where marl was once dug from the loch bed. The arrival of a military road through Galloway, built by Major William Caulfeild in the 18th century, helped the settlement grow into the town it is today.
