In January 878 Chippenham was the scene of a surprise Viking attack on Alfred the Great, at the royal settlement where he had gone to celebrate Christmas.
A night attack on the royal court
On Epiphany, 6 January 878, a Viking army led by Guthrum attacked Alfred and his court at Chippenham. The Vikings captured the settlement and forced Alfred to retreat with a small force into the Somerset marshes at Athelney.
From flight to victory
Alfred later mustered his forces and defeated Guthrum at the Battle of Edington in May 878, after which Guthrum agreed to the Treaty of Wedmore and did not attack Wessex again.
