The pier that started it all
Clacton Pier opened on 27 July 1871 as the very first public building of the newly created resort, built by the engineer Peter Bruff to receive steamships bringing visitors from London. It started life at 300 yards, was lengthened and widened in 1890, and was gradually turned from a landing stage into an entertainment pier — a Crystal Casino amusement hall in its centre, followed by the 1,000-seat Ocean Theatre in 1928. In 2020 it was named Pier of the Year by the National Piers Society, and today it holds rides, bowling, arcades and a soft-play centre alongside its food and drink stalls.
