William Wordsworth was born in Cockermouth on 7 April 1770, in a Georgian townhouse that can still be visited today.
A tied house for a lawyer
In 1765, aged just 24, lawyer John Wordsworth moved into what is now called Wordsworth House. It was a grand tied house, rent-free with his job as agent for the Cumberland estates of Sir James Lowther, one of England's richest men. His children Richard, William, Dorothy, John and Christopher were born there between 1768 and 1774.
A writer's house museum
Wordsworth House is owned by the National Trust and presented as it would have been when the family lived there. It is open as a writer's house museum from March to October each year, with guided tours on selected days.
