Coldstream, on the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders, has a population of around 2,000, and lends its name to one of the oldest regiments in the British Army.
Birthplace of a regiment
General George Monck raised a regiment based in Coldstream in the late 1650s, and on 1 January 1660 it set out from the town on the march to London that led to the restoration of Charles II. It was named the Coldstream Guards only after Monck's death in 1670, after the place it had marched from, and the Coldstream Museum in the town now covers both the regiment's history and the town's own.
A bridge built by Smeaton
For almost a thousand years, this stretch of the Tweed formed the border between Scotland and England, and the ford here was used by armies including those of Edward I, Robert the Bruce and James IV on his way to Flodden. Coldstream Bridge, designed by the engineer John Smeaton and built between 1763 and 1766, replaced that ford — and until an 1856 Act of Parliament, the Marriage House beside it made Coldstream an eastern equivalent of Gretna Green for couples eloping across the border.
