Comrie is a small Perthshire village with an outsized reputation for shaking — quite literally.
The Shaky Toon
Comrie sits directly on the Highland Boundary Fault, and has recorded more earth tremors, more often, than anywhere else in the UK. The first written record dates back to 1597, when a Perthshire earthquake was noted in a local diary, and systematic observation began in earnest after the Great Earthquake of 1839 shook the village hard enough to damage a dam near Stirling.
The world's first earthquake observatory
Two local tradesmen, postmaster Peter Macfarlane and shoemaker James Drummond, built one of the world's first seismometers in 1840 to track the tremors properly. Their work led to the Earthquake House, a tiny stone hut built at The Ross in 1874 and still in use today — widely described as the world's first purpose-built earthquake observatory, and reputedly Europe's smallest listed building.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Comrie's history is built on tremors and seismology, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the village come by delivery, the same as the rest of Perthshire and the UK.
