Cookstown was founded during the Plantation of Ulster in the early 1600s, but it's the main street built more than a century later that the town is actually known for.
A street built to impress, not just to trade
Cookstown's Main Street runs dead straight for around 1.25 miles and an unusually wide 41 metres across — laid out between 1735 and 1800 by the Stewart family with such grand scale that the town was nicknamed 'Long Hungry Cookstown'. It was designed for bulk loads of linen and livestock, and to rival the wide boulevards of Dublin and Edinburgh, not for market stalls or independent shops.
A linen town, historically
Cookstown was one of the main centres of the linen industry west of the River Bann, with flax spinning, weaving, bleaching and beetling carried out in the town right up until 1956. That history shaped the street; it didn't leave behind a sweet shop tradition the way Belfast's St George's Market did.
